Mold illness is one of the most underdiagnosed drivers of chronic symptoms in the world. Not because it's rare. But because almost nobody tests for it in the body.
This is also because the symptoms mold creates look almost identical to perimenopause, burnout, autoimmune diseases, depression, irritable bowel syndrome and dozens other conditions your doctor is far more likely to put on your chart.
This blog post is going to tell you what mold actually is, what it does inside your body, and how to know if it might be driving the symptoms you're experiencing.
First - What Is Mold, And Why Does It Make You Sick?
Mold is a type of fungus that grows in multicellular filaments and reproduces by releasing spores into the air. When those spores land in a moist environment, like the inside of the body, colonization can begin within 24 to 48 hours.
But the spores themselves are only part of the story.
Certain molds produce something called mycotoxins - toxic byproducts that are not alive, but are biologically active and can be even more damaging than the spores themselves.
Mycotoxins are microscopic, invisible and capable of penetrating deep into the body's systems - crossing the blood brain barrier, disrupting hormone production, suppressing the immune system and impairing the liver's ability to detoxify and perform its 500 other functions to keep the body healthy and thriving.
Here's what makes this particularly insidious:
Not all molds produce mycotoxins, and not all mycotoxins are produced under the same conditions - which means standard mold testing of a building doesn't always tell you whether you've been exposed to the toxic variety.
(There are many shortcomings in testing - only evaluating humidity levels, relying on visual only inspections and testing air samples, when many mycotoxins are heavy and only remain in the air for a limited period of time. This is why we support clients to obtain mold inspection findings that can be relied upon.)
It’s also worth nothing, dead mold is not safe mold. Even after remediation, mycotoxins can remain on surfaces, particularly soft surfaces like cloth couches, carpets and wooden furniture, and thus continue to affect your health.
This is one of the most important things people get wrong about mold illness - they treat the building and assume the problem is solved.
You must treat the contents and most importantly, your body too.
Mold Is Far More Common Than You Think
Most people picture mold illness as something that happens in visibly flooded or obviously damaged buildings. That's almost never the reality.
According to the EPA and WHO, over 50% of buildings in the United States have some form of water damage. Roof leaks, plumbing issues, poor ventilation, condensation - any water intrusion can trigger colonization in less than two days, often behind walls, under floors, inside HVAC systems and in spaces that look and smell completely fine.
And it's not just your home. Mold exposure happens in schools, dorm rooms, military housing, offices, airports, libraries, cars and new construction. The building that smells fine, looks clean and was recently renovated may still have a mold problem hidden in the materials used during construction.
Mold also enters the body through food. Grains, corn, coffee, nuts and dried fruit products are common sources of mycotoxin exposure in the diet - meaning even people living in mold-free environments can carry a significant mycotoxin burden simply from what they eat.
What Mold Does Inside Your Body
This is the part that explains why mold illness is so difficult to diagnose - and why it can look like almost anything.
Once mycotoxins enter the body they don't stay in one place. They move systemically, crossing into the brain, disrupting hormonal signaling, suppressing and simultaneously over-activating the immune system, impairing liver detoxification and damaging the gut lining.
The result is a body that is simultaneously inflamed, depleted and unable to clear the very thing that's making it sick.
Specifically, mycotoxins impact:
The nervous system - crossing the blood brain barrier, disrupting neurotransmitters and driving neuroinflammation. This is brain fog, anxiety, poor memory and mood changes made biological.
The immune system - both suppressing the immune response and triggering overreaction. The result is a body that can't fight acute infections well, but stays in a chronic state of low grade inflammation.
The endocrine system - suppressing pituitary function, disrupting hormone production and mimicking estrogen. This is why mold illness so frequently looks exactly like perimenopause.
The liver - impairing bile flow, overwhelming phase 1 and phase 2 detoxification pathways and depleting glutathione - your body's master antioxidant and primary detox compound. When the liver can't clear toxins efficiently, every downstream system suffers.
The digestive system - increasing intestinal permeability, disrupting the microbiome, impairing digestion and creating food sensitivities that seem to come out of nowhere.
Mitochondrial function - damaging mitochondrial membranes and impairing ATP production. This is the cellular explanation for the kind of exhaustion that sleep doesn't fix.

Why Your Doctor Keeps Missing It
Mold illness doesn't show up on standard blood work. It doesn't have a neat diagnostic code. And most conventional practitioners - even well-meaning, thorough ones - have no training in environmental illness or mycotoxin testing.
The result is that the average person with mold illness sees ten or more practitioners before finding answers. They collect diagnoses - perimenopause, anxiety, fibromyalgia, IBS, chronic fatigue - that describe their symptoms without explaining what's driving them.
This is not a failure of intelligence or effort on your part. It's a gap in the conventional medical system. The tools to identify mold illness exist - they're just not part of standard care.
What's required is functional testing. Specifically a mycotoxin urine panel that measures the actual toxic byproducts in your body, alongside comprehensive bloodwork interpreted through a functional lens that can identify the downstream patterns mold creates - immune depletion, liver stress, nutrient deficiency, thyroid disruption and more.
Testing is the only way to know. And knowing changes everything - because you finally stop mislabeling and silencing symptoms and finally addressing the root cause.
What Recovery Actually Looks Like
Mold illness is not a life sentence.
When the toxic burden is identified and addressed through a properly sequenced protocol - like the ones we specifically develop for every client based on testing - the body knows how to heal.
Not just back to where you were before. The goal in my practice is to have clients end up healthier than they were before the exposure.
The key word is sequenced. You cannot detox mold effectively without first supporting the liver's ability to clear it. You cannot address the mycotoxin burden without dealing with parasites that hold mold and metals in the body. The order matters as much as the protocol itself.
